The Department of Library and Information Science was setup in the year 1990-91 under 7th plan of Govt. of India. Pioneered work of Prof. Krishna Nath Chattopadhaya, the then Vice Chancellor of the university & untiring effort by Dr. Ajoy Ranjan Chakraborty led to development of this department to mitigate the long standing social demands of entire north Bengal. Started with self support the department maid its strong footprint into the academic domain under the leadership of Dr. Chakraborty with active support from the professionals engaged in the university library.
The students of this department excelled in the work places throughout India. Although BLIS was the prime course that had been taught near about 15years, a gradual social demand for introducing Masters Course in Library Science was paramount. In the year 2005, Masters Course was started. Development of a separate building for the department adjacent to the Central Library was a welcome move. Again in the year 2011-12 the space of the building was enhanced. During last 20 years it was the primary objective of the department was to develop skilled manpower. Updated and modernized syllabus, well equipped computer lab, imbibed the students to explore the profession in better way.
