The Department of Library and Information Science was setup in the year 1990-91 under 7th plan of Govt. of India. Pioneered work of Prof. Krishna Nath Chattopadhyay, the then Vice Chancellor of the university & untiring effort by Dr. Ajoy Ranjan Chakraborty led to development of this department to mitigate the long standing social demands of entire north Bengal. Started with self support the department maid its strong footprint into the academic domain under the leadership of Dr. Chakraborty with active support from the professionals engaged in the university library.
The students of this department excelled in the work places throughout India. Although BLIS was the prime course that had been taught near about 15years, a gradual social demand for introducing Masters Course in Library Science was paramount. In the year 2005, Masters Course was started. Development of a separate building for the department adjacent to the Central Library was a welcome move. Again in the year 2011-12 the space of the building was enhanced. During last 20 years it was the primary objective of the department was to develop skilled manpower. Updated and modernized syllabus, well equipped computer lab, imbibed the students to explore the profession in better way.
The Department of Library and Information Science is organized in the Faculty of Arts with the efforts of (late) Dr. Ajay Ranjan Chakraborty. For the first time in the north bengal that a Library Science Department was constituted on par with other teaching departments at this University and this was the only Department in the entire north bengal which, in addition to the B.L.I.Sc., degree, it was providing education of library professionals of the adjacent colleges under the jurisdiction of this University.
The Department during the past 30 years of its existence has played an vital role in Library Education in the country. Already more than 3000 students have taken their Library Science degrees from this Department, of which M.Lib.I.Sc. degrees and BLISc degrees.
Department ever since its inception continues to play its role of leadership in Library and Information Science education with the changing and complex needs of libraries and documentation centers in the country. The Department took concrete steps in 2005 to introduce new areas of study in Information Science and Management, such as ‘Computer and its Application in Libraries,’ Information Storage and Retrieval,’ and ‘Library Systems Analysis & Statistical Methods’ in its curriculum. Department revised its syllabi in 2018 both in BLISc & MLIS Programmes. Again revised its syllabi in 2020 with more emphasis on Information and Communication Technology applications in Libraries in both BLISc. and MLIS. Programmes in each semester.
The Department adequately equipped with state-of-the-art ICT infrastructure for students not only for classroom teaching but also for hands-on Practicals. It is providing free Wi-Fi connectivity and email facilities for all the bonafide students of the Department. The Department has already established a very high reputation for itself in India and abroad. The Alumni of the Department consists of well-known professionals who are occupying very prominent positions not only in India but also in several other countries of the world. The faculty consists of teachers who are well known in the profession in this country as well as internationally. The Department provides facilities for Library, Hostel facilities for outside students, Medical facilities, Free-ship and scholarships for meritorious students.
Every year the Department organizes visits to reputed Libraries/Documentation Centres in different parts of the country in which participation by BLISc students is compulsory.
